Firefighter Loses Leg in Accident on I-85 After Responding to a Rollover Accident

May 18, 2019

ATLANTA, GEORGIA – According to online news articles published by www.wsbtv.com and www.ajc.com, a firefighter is in serious condition after suffering catastrophic injuries, including the amputation of one of his legs, while responding to a rollover accident on I-85.*

On the morning of May 12, 2019, the Atlanta Fire Department was responding to a rollover accident on northbound I-85 near Cleveland Avenue. As one firefighter was exiting the driver’s side of the fire engine, he was struck by a vehicle that hydroplaned and lost control.  The firefighter sustained severe injuries to both legs and required the amputation of one of his legs.  He has been receiving treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The accident shut down all lanes of I-85 at Cleveland Avenue for more than two hours.  The accident involving the firefighter happened just before 8:00 a.m., shutting down traffic until approximately 10:00 a.m.

The Atlanta Police report that the initial rollover collision the fire department was responding to did not result in any injuries.  The Atlanta Police also stressed to the public how dangerous the highway can be for first responders, especially during bad weather.  The driver of the vehicle that struck the firefighter is currently in custody, and criminal charges are pending.  No additional details are available aside from the fact that the vehicle was hydroplaning when it slammed into the fire engine.
