On the morning of May 12, 2019, the Atlanta Fire Department was responding to a rollover accident on northbound I-85 near Cleveland Avenue. As one firefighter was exiting the driver’s side of the fire engine, he was struck by a vehicle that hydroplaned and lost control.  The firefighter sustained severe injuries to both legs and required the amputation of one of his legs.  He has been receiving treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The accident shut down all lanes of I-85 at Cleveland Avenue for more than two hours.  The accident involving the firefighter happened just before 8:00 a.m., shutting down traffic until approximately 10:00 a.m.
