Firefighter Severely Injured After Hit by Vehicle in Atlanta, Georgia
ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online news report posted at wgxa.tv, a firefighter was severely injured after being hit by a vehicle in Atlanta, Georgia. The firefighter was helping a car accident victim on an interstate, when another vehicle ran into him.*
The incident occurred on Sunday, May 12, on Interstate 85 in Atlanta. WGXA and local officials report that a car accident had occurred in the northbound lanes of I-85 by Cleveland Avenue. The cause of this collision was not reported, and it is not clear how many vehicles were involved.
The accident had all lanes closed off, and emergency crews were responding to help the victims. The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department was among those responding.
WGXA says a 47-year-old sergeant with the fire department was at the scene assisting a driver who was injured inside of an overturned car. While he was helping this person, a passing motorist entered the accident scene and crashed into the firefighter. Authorities have not yet said why the driver of this vehicle lost control and drove into the scene.
WGXA reports the firefighter, a seven-year member of Atlanta Fire Rescue, was severely injured in the collision, suffering an amputated left leg and injuries to his right leg. Emergency crews took the firefighter to Grady Memorial Hospital, where WGXA says he underwent immediate surgery. Officials with Atlanta Fire told reporters that he was in stable condition following surgery.
Investigation into both accidents is ongoing. No information about potential charges had been reported at the time of the WGXA story.
