Wrong Way Accident in Hillsborough County Leaves One Person Dead and Another Seriously Injured
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA – According to an online news article published by www.tbreporter.com, one person is dead and another seriously injured following a wrong way accident on U.S. Highway 301.*
Shortly before midnight on May 11, 2019, a man was killed and another man seriously injured when both men collided with one another on U.S. 301. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 21-year-old Riverview man was traveling northbound in a 1999 Toyota Corolla using the southbound lanes of U.S. 301. The man collided head-on with a 2010 Hyundai Genesis driven by a 31-year-old Parrish man.
The 21-year-old man died at the scene of the accident, and the 31-year-old man was transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The 31-year-old man was reportedly in serious condition following the accident.
The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the 21-year-old Riverview man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Additionally, the Florida Highway Patrol reported that alcohol was not a factor in the case of the accident.
It is unclear why the 21-year-old driver was traveling northbound on U.S 301 in the southbound lanes. The accident continues to be investigated as law enforcement officials determine how and why a driver manages to travel the wrong way on a highway. Typically, such wrong-way accidents involve one or more drivers being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
However, because neither driver was purportedly driving under the influence, authorities must look to other causes which may include, among others, drowsy driving, disorientation due to a medical condition or event, unfamiliarity with the roads, miscalculation or misreading of traffic signs, and limited visibility.
