Two-Vehicle Accident on Florida Turnpike Near Clermont Leaves One Woman Dead
CLERMONT, FLORIDA – According to an online news article published by www.orlandosentinel.com, a 32-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries in a two-vehicle accident on the Florida Turnpike.*
Just before 12:00 p.m., a 32-year-old woman was involved in an accident on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 272. The woman, who was driving a Saturn passenger vehicle, was allegedly straddling two lanes on the highway when she was rear-ended by a pickup truck, driven by a 25-year-old Altamonte Springs man. The impact caused the woman’s vehicle to roll over. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries where she later died.
What Caused this Tragic Accident?
Because an investigation is still underway, it is unclear whether any specific factors contributed to the cause of this accident. The only important fact that has been disclosed is that the 32-year-old woman was allegedly straddling two lanes at the time she was rear-ended.
While highways traditionally see more dangerous accidents than streets or roads, the desire to make highways safer can sometimes backfire. For example, if highways are made too safe and easy for drivers to use, then drivers may be at risk of becoming too complacent and inattentive. Such a concept is called the “Peltzman Effect.” In general, when drivers feel comfortable and do not need to pay as much attention to merging lanes or traffic signals, they can become bored and turn to their phones to text, or to their radio to change the station. It is unknown whether such factors played a role in the accident referenced above.
As such, a happy medium between highway safety and ensuring drivers stay attentive and on their toes may be the best way to prevent tragic accidents like the one that claimed the life of a 32-year-old woman.
