Deputy Vehicle Collides with Moped in Gilchrist County, FL; Moped Driver Killed
GILCHRIST COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report posted at wctv.tv, a sheriff’s deputy patrol vehicle was involved in a collision with a moped in Gilchrist County, Florida. The collision proved fatal, as WCTV reports the driver of the moped did not survive the accident. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.*
The collision took place shortly after midnight on May 8 on State Road 26 in Gilchrist County. Florida Highway Patrol and WCTV report that at about 12:15 a.m., a patrol vehicle for the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office somehow collided with a moped. The accident occurred near County Road 313 on State Road 26, by Trenton, Florida.
At this time, it is not clear what caused the accident or what factors might have played a role in the collision. Details about the collision itself were not included in the WCTV report.
WCTV reports that the driver of the moped sustained fatal injuries in the wreck and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified him as a 30-year-old man from Gainesville, Florida. It does not appear that anyone else had been riding on the moped when it crashed.
It is not clear if the deputy sustained any injuries. WCTV further reports that the deputy declined medical treatment beyond the scene. The deputy was not identified in the news report, and it is unclear what he or she was doing in Gilchrist County. No statement from the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office was included in the report.
Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation into the accident. According to WCTV, Troopers say charges are pending.
