Tampa Bay Defensive Lineman Injured in Florida Car Accident
BROWARD COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report published by foxnews.com, a defensive lineman with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was injured in a car accident during the week of April 29 in Broward County, Florida. The news report says the player suffered a fractured neck and might be out for the duration of the upcoming football season.*
The accident reportedly involved only one vehicle and happened on May 2. The circumstances of the accident were not reported, nor was the cause of the accident. Fox News says that the player was not speeding at the time of the crash and has not been charged in connection with the accident.
The player has been with the NFL for nine years and was traded to Tampa Bay in 2018. He played all 16 games during the 2018-2019 season for the Buccaneers and had more than 12 sacks. It was his most successful season in terms of sacks since 2014, when he was playing for the New York Giants.
Fox News says the player sustained a fractured neck and might require surgery. He is reportedly seeking the opinions of multiple surgeons before deciding on a treatment plan. It is possible that the injury and subsequent surgery could mean that he will not be able to play in the 2019-2020 season.
Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht issued a statement following the accident, saying, “As we stated last week following the news of [the] auto accident, our immediate concern was for both [the player] and his passenger. While [he] was treated and released in South Florida the same day of the accident, we wanted to ensure that our medical team had an opportunity to perform a thorough evaluation here in Tampa, and that process is currently ongoing.”
