23 Pedestrians Killed on Three Roads in Hillsborough County, FL, in Five Years

May 11, 2019

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report from fox13news.com, a total of 23 pedestrians have been killed on just three roads in Hillsborough County, Florida, within the last five years. Several Florida agencies are teaming up to try to increase safety in these areas and reduce deadly crashes.*

Hillsborough Avenue, Busch Boulevard, and Fowler Avenue are drawing the attention of law enforcement officers in Hillsborough County. In five years, more than 20 pedestrians have lost their lives on these three roadways. Officers say something needs to be done to try to reduce fatal collisions.

“If you drive any of those corridors, you will see that pedestrians unfortunately take risks,” said Florida DOT spokesperson Kris Carson. “They will not use the crosswalk, they will run across the road, and these are large corridors, six lanes or more.”

In the later part of spring and into the summer, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the Tampa Police Department, and the Florida Department of Transportation are coming together to increase driver education and crack down on traffic violations on the three problem roadways.

Law enforcement officers will be stopping drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians who are violating traffic laws and ticketing at their discretion. The operation will run for a total of 17 weeks and is funded by a grant from the Florida DOT.

“When you consider that Hillsborough County is over 1,000 square miles, and we’re only talking about eight miles of roadway, to have that many fatalities, obviously we have some issues we need to address on these roadways,” said Cpl. Steven Cherpock, of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office.
