Deputy Airlifted After Motorcycle Hit by Bus in Monroe County, Florida
MONROE COUNTY, FL. – According to a news story reported online at flkeysnews.com, a deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was airlifted to a hospital after a bus hit his motorcycle in Monroe County, Florida. Authorities report that the driver of the bus was cited in connection with the incident.*
The collision occurred in the morning on May 6 on U.S. Highway 1 in Monroe County. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and FL Keys News report that at about 8:20 a.m., a 34-year-old Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy was traveling south on U.S. 1 on a BMW traffic patrol motorcycle.
Near mile marker 16, the deputy reportedly turned on his emergency lights and reduced his speed. It is not clear if the deputy was going to respond to a call or was going to make a traffic stop. When the deputy slowed down, however, a 2018 Odyssey bus that had been traveling south behind him ran into the back of his motorcycle.
FL Keys News reports that the deputy was injured in the accident, and emergency responders called in a medical helicopter to fly him to a hospital. A spokesperson for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said that the deputy was hospitalized at Jackson South Medical Center but was stable and in “good spirits” later that afternoon.
FL Keys News reports that the driver of the bus was not injured in the accident. Authorities identified her as a 76-year-old woman from Key West, Florida. Florida Highway Patrol reportedly cited her with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. It does not appear that anyone else was on the bus at the time of the collision.
