Bicyclist Hit, Killed by Vehicle in Polk County, Florida; Driver Flees Scene
POLK COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report posted by wfla.com, a bicyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle in Polk County, Florida. Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office say that the driver of the vehicle left the scene of the accident, and they are still searching for him or her.*
The accident took place in the early morning on May 6 on Washington Avenue in Polk County. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene at approximately 5 a.m., but upon investigation, deputies believed the accident had occurred about three hours prior.
Deputies and WFLA report that a bicyclist was headed westbound on Washington Avenue around 2 a.m., when a passing vehicle hit him near U.S. Highway 27. The cause of the collision is still not known. Deputies say the bicyclist was thrown from the bike during impact, and the vehicle driver left the scene.
WFLA states that paramedics found the bicyclist lying near the sidewalk on Washington Avenue. He had severe injuries when emergency responders arrived, WFLA says, and he was transported to Lake Wales Medical Center, where he later died. He was identified as a 59-year-old man.
Deputies have not released a description of the vehicle or any identifying information about the vehicle driver. Security footage obtained by deputies appears to suggest the vehicle is a full-sized, older model sedan.
