Bicyclist Suffers Serious Injuries in Garden City Accident

May 04, 2019

GARDEN CITY, GEORGIA – As reported online by wsav.com, a woman riding her bicycle sustained serious injuries when she was hit by a vehicle on Highway 21 near Minus Avenue.*

According to one witness, on May 1, 2019, a woman was hit by a vehicle when she was crossing the street on her bicycle.  The witness stated that the traffic light was yellow at the time the woman proceeded across the street with her bicycle.  The collision happened on Highway 21, also known as Augusta Road, near Minus Avenue.  Two eastbound lanes on Highway 21 were closed following the accident.

Determining Who is at Fault for Causing a Bicycle Accident

While bicycle accidents may share similar facts, every accident is unique and requires a thorough investigation by police and accident investigation specialists.  To determine fault, investigators will evaluate every potential cause or contributing factor.  Common causes of bicycle accidents (which are often the same causes of many motor vehicle accidents) include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Speeding;
  • Failing to yield;
  • Running a red light or stop sign;
  • Failing to signal when changing lanes;
  • Texting or talking on the phone while driving;
  • Driving while intoxicated; and
  • Weather conditions (which may create limited visibility).

One important fact regarding the Garden City accident is that the woman on her bicycle allegedly crossed the street when the traffic light was yellow.  Whether the woman had the right-of-way is a crucial fact for investigators.  The factors listed above, which are common causes of bicycle accidents, are likely being evaluated as well.  Once a thorough evaluation is complete, a conclusion can be reached as to what party or parties may be at fault for causing the accident.
