Mayor of Tybee Island, Georgia, Pushing for Bridge Improvements in Face of Accidents
TYBEE ISLAND, GA. – According to an online news story from wjcl.com, the mayor of Tybee Island, Georgia, is pushing the state to fund improvements for the bridge on Highway 80 in the face of several traffic accidents. Two accidents occurred on the bridge during the week of April 29, one of which left a woman in labor stranded in traffic.*
On May 1, construction crews had to close the Highway 80 Bull River Bridge because of undisclosed issues with the structure. The closure then led to a five-vehicle accident that trapped a woman in labor in a line of blocked traffic.
“The ambulance that we had on the island was responding to that five-car accident,” said Mayor Jason Buelterman. “It had to literally back up, headed east across the bridge to get to this family that was in need of help.”
Two days before this incident, Buelterman said that he was worried about an accident occurring in which emergency responders would have difficulty reaching people to get them off the island for medical care. The woman stuck in traffic was that fear coming to life, and emergency personnel were up to the task.
“They were able to get the family and that expectant mom onto the ambulance,” Buelterman said. “The ambulance was able to then get them to the hospital, and I’m happy to report that everyone is safe and sound. I think this situation is another example of why this thing needs to be done now, and not 10, 20 years from now.”
Buelterman said the Georgia Department of Transportation is open to discussing changes, but he also encouraged Georgia residents to contact local officials to push harder for work to begin.
