Bicyclist Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle on U.S. Highway 98 in Florida

May 05, 2019

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, FLORIDA – As reported online by, a bicyclist suffered fatal injuries when struck by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 98.*

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a bicyclist, whose identity has not yet been released, was hit by a Honda CRV driven by a 63-year-old man on U.S. Highway 98 in the early morning hours of May 2, 2019.  The Honda CRV was traveling east on U.S. Highway 98 near Overdown Drive at the time of the accident.  The bicyclist was traveling south when he/she crossed the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 98.

A press release issued by the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that the bicyclist “violated the right of way,” which made it difficult for the Honda CRV to avoid striking the bicyclist on the right side.  The bicyclist was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the SUV did not sustain any injuries in the accident.

The Dangers of Bicycle Accidents at Night

Traveling on a bicycle is already considered dangerous and risky when bicycles are sharing the road with vehicles.  The time of day is also a critical factor, as low visibility can contribute to an accident.  Additionally, because bicycles are not protected as drivers are in a vehicle, the risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries is high.

The bicycle accident referenced above happened late at night when it was dark. Moreover, the bicyclist was allegedly not using a designated crosswalk to travel across U.S. Highway 98, and the driver of the Honda CRV may not have expected to see a bicyclist traveling late at night.  This tragic accident is a reminder that bicyclists and motorists need to be alert at all times, because if an accident does happen, the consequences can be tragically catastrophic.
