Man Killed While Walking Across Interstate in Charlotte, North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC. – According to an online news report from wsoctv.com, a man was killed while walking across an interstate in Charlotte, North Carolina. The news report indicates that the man, who has not been identified, was from out of town and was trying to ask for directions from someone who was working on the other side of the interstate.*

The incident occurred on the morning of April 30 on Interstate 85 in Charlotte. WSOC reports that an 82-year-old man from New York and his wife had been visiting relatives in Inman, South Carolina, and were on their way back home, traveling north on I-85. Near the Glenwood Drive exit on the interstate, the man became lost and pulled his vehicle into the shoulder. 

The news report says the man saw a North Carolina Department of Transportation worker on a lawnmower on the other side of the interstate, and he wanted to try to ask the worker for directions. He reportedly crossed eight lanes on the north- and southbound sides of the interstate to talk to the worker, but the worker had ridden away by the time he reached the other side. 

The man then reportedly attempted to cross back over the interstate to his car and was hit by a passing vehicle. He had crossed three lanes of the interstate on the southbound side and was hit near the concrete wall in the median. WSOC reports that the man, who was not named in the report, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the woman driving the vehicle did not see the man until it was too late. Troopers indicated to reporters that the woman would likely not face any charges.
