Man Charged for Deadly Wrong-Way Car Crash in Sumter County, Florida

SUMTER COUNTY, FL. – According to a news report published online at, a man has been charged for a deadly wrong-way car crash that occurred earlier this month in Sumter County, Florida. Investigators on the case believe the man was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident, according to the report, and he was placed under arrest.* 

The crash happened in the morning on April 4 on Sumter County Road 470 in Sumter County. Shortly after midnight that day, a man was driving a Nissan Altima the wrong direction on the road. Florida Highway Patrol reports he was going west in the eastbound lane of County Road 470. Near the city limits of Sumterville, the Nissan crashed head-on into an eastbound Ford Fiesta. 

After impact, the Ford rotated and crashed into a fence. The Ocala StarBanner reports that the driver of the Ford suffered fatal injuries in the wreck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as a 68-year-old man from Leesburg, Florida. 

The Ocala StarBanner further reports that the driver of the Nissan was seriously injured and taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was identified as a 37-year-old man from Ocala, Florida. 

After investigating the case, Florida Highway Patrol investigators developed reason to believe the Nissan driver was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. An analysis revealed the presence of drugs in his system, according to the news report. 

According to the Ocala StarBanner, on April 24, Troopers placed the driver under arrest on charges of vehicular manslaughter, negligent manslaughter and DUI drugs. He was reportedly booked into the Sumter County Jail and released on a bond of $61,000.
