WINSTON-SALEM, NC. – According to news reports published online at wral.com and journalnow.com, a truck driver was killed in a construction accident in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Some construction material fell onto the victim, according to the report, while he was reportedly delivering the material to the construction site.*

The incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. on April 22. A 37-year-old truck driver from South Carolina was trying to unload some soundproof wall slats near Peace Haven Road for the construction project on U.S. Highway 421 in Winston-Salem. He was reportedly removing straps from the load of slats, when one of the slats fell on top of him.

The Winston-Salem Police Department and both news sources report that the man sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The reports said the victim was working with Creekside Transport and Total Quality Logistics as a self-employed trucker. The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has reportedly notified the victim’s family members of the accident.

Both news reports state that the local Occupational Safety and Health Administration office was launching an investigation into the incident. A public information officer with the North Carolina Department of Labor confirmed that an OSHA compliance officer responded to the scene.

No further information about the accident or the investigation was available at the time the news reports were posted online. The construction project taking place on U.S. 421 is designed to widen the highway to three lanes near the area where the accident occurred. The project has been ongoing since June 2018.
