Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Sunrise, Florida

SUNRISE, FL. – According to news reports posted online at and, a bicyclist was hit and killed in a crash with a vehicle in Sunrise, Florida. Authorities say the driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene after the accident but fled the area. The reports state officers located the driver not long after the accident.*

The collision took place in the late afternoon on April 22 on West Oakland Park Boulevard in Sunrise. The reports are conflicting about the time of the accident, but it occurred sometime between 3:45 and 4:30 p.m. that day. The Sunrise Police Department reports that a bicyclist was traveling on West Oakland Park Boulevard, when a passing vehicle ran into him. 

It is not clear what direction the bicycle and the vehicle were traveling at the time or how the accident happened. Photos from the scene posted to both news sites show the bicycle was found in a right turn lane on the roadway. The circumstances of the collision were not described in either report. 

The Sunrise Police Department and both news sources report that the cyclist suffered fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the victim’s age or name. 

Police say the driver of the vehicle did not stay at the scene after the accident. Officers were reportedly about to locate him a short time later. WSVN reports that the driver was being questioned, while Local 10 reports he was placed under arrest. The driver has not been identified, and charges have not been announced.
