Driver Flees Police, Causes Deadly Vehicle Crash in Atlanta, Georgia
ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online news story reported by wsbtv.com, a driver fled from police, then ended up crashing into two vehicles in Atlanta, Georgia. The crash caused the death of one person and injuries to six other people, according to the news report.*
The incident began at approximately 3:40 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. WSB-TV reports that a Georgia State Patrol Trooper was driving on Spring Street in Atlanta and observed a Dodge Challenger traveling in the wrong direction on the roadway. The Trooper attempted to pull over the driver of the Dodge, but the driver fled.
Authorities say the Dodge entered Interstate 75/85 with the Trooper in pursuit. Short thereafter, the Dodge crashed into two other vehicles near Williams Street. One of the vehicles was a red Ford Expedition, and the other was a silver Nissan Altima.
WSB-TV says that several people who were riding in the Ford were ejected during impact. WSB-TV further reports that five people from the Ford were transported to a local hospital, and one of them died at the hospital. The person who died was identified as a 28-year-old man from Florida. The injured persons were identified as members of his family, all from Florida, between the ages of 25 and 64.
In addition, WSB-TV states that two people who had been riding in the Altima were injured and taken to a hospital. They were identified as a 58-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man. Current conditions were not reported.
The driver of the Dodge, identified as a 34-year-old man from Union City, Georgia, tried to run away from the crash scene, according to the news report, but Troopers apprehended and arrested him. WSB-TV reports he has been charged with second-degree murder, vehicular homicide, and serious injury by vehicle, among other crimes.
