Tractor-Trailer, RV Collide in Smithfield, NC, Sending Two to Hospital

April 21, 2019

SMITHFIELD, NC. – According to online news reports from and, a tractor-trailer and an RV collided in Smithfield, North Carolina, sending two people to a hospital for treatment. One of the victims was airlifted. It appears from the reports that the collision began with debris in the roadway.*

The accident took place around 1 p.m. on April 17 on Interstate 95 in Smithfield. At approximately 1 p.m., a Jeep, a tractor-trailer, and an RV were traveling northbound, when the Jeep came upon a tire in the roadway. North Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the Jeep braked hard to try to avoid hitting the tire.

The tractor-trailer traveling behind the Jeep then also braked suddenly, which resulted in the RV crashing into the back of the tractor-trailer. Troopers said the RV was towing a car behind it, and the RV became lodged in the back of the tractor-trailer. It does not appear the Jeep was involved in the collision, but this was not confirmed in either report.

WRAL reports that two people were injured in the accident and transported to WakeMed in Raleigh, North Carolina, for treatment. One of the victims was airlifted from the scene. Neither of the victims was identified. It is unclear if these people were both in the RV. WRAL reported that the driver of the RV was trapped in the vehicle for about an hour before emergency crews could free him.

Witnesses at the scene told reporters with ABC 11 that the accident was a traumatic thing to see.

“It was horrific screeching and just metal on metal,” one witness said. “If I had been any closer, we would’ve been part of it. It was scary.”
