Woman Killed in Suspected DUI Crash in Sarasota County, Florida

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news story reported at, a woman was killed in what is suspected to have been a DUI crash in Sarasota County, Florida. The accident occurred on Interstate 75 and reportedly caused all of the southbound lanes of the interstate to close for more than five hours.*

The crash took place at about 2 a.m. on I-75 South in Sarasota County. Florida Highway Patrol and the Bradenton Herald report that a 2016 Chrysler 200 was stopped in the southbound centerline of the interstate, and a 2007 Nissan Sentra traveling in the center lane struck the back of the Chrysler. 

After impact, both vehicles traveled across the interstate. The Chrysler came to a rest against a guardrail, and the Nissan stopped while facing north. Troopers reported that the driver of the Chrysler was under the influence of alcohol. Otherwise, they did not report any information about why the vehicle was stopped on the interstate. 

The Bradenton Herald reports that a passenger in the Nissan was killed in the collision. She was identified as a 63-year-old woman from Lehigh Acres, Florida. The driver of the Nissan was seriously injured in the crash, the news report says, and emergency crews took him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He was identified as a 30-year-old man from Lehigh Acres. 

The Bradenton Herald also reports that the driver of the Chrysler, a 26-year-old woman from North Port, Florida, was not injured. However, troopers reported that she is facing charges of driving under the influence manslaughter, driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, driving under the influence causing property damage, and obstructing traffic with a disabled vehicle.
