LAKE CITY, FL. – According to a news story published online at wctv.tv, a motorcyclist was killed in an accident in Lake City, Florida. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and it does not appear that any other vehicles were involved. The Lake City Police Department is handling the case.*
The accident happened sometime on April 13, but the WCTV report does not say what time. WCTV reports that police officers and EMS responded to the scene at Southeast Baya Drive and Southeast Waldron Terrace on a call about a motorcycle accident. According to the WCTV report and witness information, the motorcycle was traveling east on Baya Drive and somehow left its lane of travel.
The motorcycle reportedly traveled across opposite traffic, then veered off the road and onto the sidewalk, where it crashed. The report did not say why the accident occurred or what factors might have caused the motorcycle to leave the roadway. The report did not list any other vehicles involved in the collision.
WCTV reports that the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in the wreck and did not survive. Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene, according to the report. He was identified as a male. His age and city were not provided. His name is withheld from this story. Officials reportedly indicated that he was not wearing a helmet.
“While Florida does not require motorcycle riders over 21 years old to wear a helmet, our experience has shown that even minor crashes can be fatal to riders who choose not to,” said Lake City Police Chief Aragatha Gilmore.
