Suspect Released, Second Suspect Charged for Mitchell County, Georgia, Pedestrian Fatality

MITCHELL COUNTY, GA. – According to a news story reported online by, a suspect has been released, and a second suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a pedestrian fatality accident in Mitchell County, Georgia. The case involves a vehicle hit-and-run collision that killed a pedestrian in Camilla, Georgia.* 

At approximately 4 a.m., a vehicle hit a pedestrian on Georgia Highway 19 in Camilla. The pedestrian had been attempting to cross Highway 19 when the vehicle hit him, according to WALB. WALB reports that Georgia State Patrol confirmed the pedestrian died of his injuries, and the vehicle involved fled the scene of the accident. 

Georgia State Patrol immediately launched an investigation to located the missing vehicle and driver. Shortly after the accident, Troopers arrested a man in connection with the crash. However, after questioning and further investigation, Georgia State Patrol Post Commander John Vanlandingham states that this suspect was released. 

At the same time as the initial suspect’s arrest, authorities arrested a second man in connection with the accident. This man was staying at a hotel with the initial suspect, according to WALB. While the initial suspect was released without charges, the second man under arrest was charged for the fatality collision. 

Commander Vanlandingham said that this man was arraigned on April 2 on charges of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, and driving with a suspended license. His bond was set at $30,000, according to WALB, and he is being held in the Mitchell County Jail.
