April 08, 2019

LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. — According to an online news report at wcnc.com, a driver is hit by a wheel that flew off of a boat trailer in Lenoir County, North Carolina.  The driver is lucky to be alive, as he only sustained minor injuries.*

A driver of a jeep escapes major injuries after a truck carrying a boat on a trailer lost one of their wheels, which struck the jeep’s windshield.  The accident occurred on Highway 70 close to Neuse River Bridge.  The windshield was completely damaged after the wheel smashed into it.

Per the North Lenoir Fire and Rescue, a truck towing a large boat was going in an easterly direction when a wheel dislodged from the boat trailer. The wheel, once freed from the trailer, went across the median and struck the jeep head on, who was traveling westbound on the roadway.

According to emergency personnel, the driver of the jeep escaped major injuries.  In essence, they note that the jeep driver is lucky to be alive and reportedly uninjured.

Per statistics generated by AAA, over five hundred fatalities occurred between 2011 and 2014 as a result of loose debris on the roadway.  In 2017 alone, there were almost seven hundred accidents as a result of debris and one hundred seventy nine people seriously injured.

To protect oneself from road debris, it is important to check ahead of you every few seconds for road debris. Also, do not follow other drivers too closely. Maintain a safe distance on the front and sides of your automobile.  This allows you to have enough space to navigate around road debris should it cross your path.  If you see debris in the roadway, slow down your vehicle, which can help you to avoid it from striking you.
