Man Perishes in Boating Accident in Pine Island Sound, Florida
PINE ISLAND SOUND, FL – According to online news reports at winknews.com and news-press.com, a man died in a boating accident in Pine Island Sound, Florida.*
A man who has two children drowned at about 10:15 a.m. near Captiva Island and Cayo Costa after falling off of his boat and puncturing his lung in Pine Island Sound. The man was on a boat with several individuals where he was ejected from the watercraft. The man was on his way to Cayo Costa for work when the boater hit the wake of another boat, causing the man to fall into the water. A friend of his attempted to save him but was unable to do so. The propeller of the boat caused the man to sustain a punctured lung after falling into the water. By the time the man’s friend was able to locate the victim, he had already drowned.
According to the man’s uncle, “[t]hey’re still doing the investigation. From what I hear they were in a small 17-foot boat, flat-bottom boat, and they got washed out by another boat. It spun their boat around, which threw everybody and my nephew got thrown off, [my nephew] got thrown off the boat, and was hit by the prop and didn’t make it.”
The man worked for a cleaning company and was headed towards Pine Island Sound because he had a job there. The man was taking a boat because that is the only way to access the island.
Currently, the boat is at the Pineland Marina where the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is currently conducting an investigation of the accident.
The accident remains under investigation at this time. There are no further details available on the incident.
