One Dead, Two Injured in Three-Car Crash in Sunrise, Florida

April 06, 2019

SUNRISE, Fla. — A massive crash in Sunrise community of Broward County on Friday, March 22, 2019, left one person dead, two others severely injured, and a third person with injuries described as minor. NBC Miami reported that the accident happened during the height of the Friday morning commute. Cars backed up for a long stretch as officers began an investigation into how the deadly crash occurred. Law enforcement officers along with crime scene investigators continue to investigate why this devastating crash happened. *

The deadly, albeit dramatic crash, happened at the intersection of University Drive and NE 26thStreet. A news helicopter referred to as Chopper 6 flew over the debris field that stretched for several hundred feet. The aerial footage shows a pickup truck and two smaller sedans with massive damage. The pickup truck appears to have been exiting a Shell gas station and overrode one automobile. Meanwhile, a gray vehicle with the driver's side ripped wide open as if it was an aluminum can came to rest on the same side of the divided highway but down the streets and across from the other two vehicles. The video also shows police re-routing traffic away from the scene of the crash off of University Drive.

Law enforcement investigators are still trying to figure out what happened. The reporting officers did not identify which person died and in what vehicle that person rode. Officers did say that first responders observed that the person who perished passed away at the scene of the accident. Additionally, officers noted that the two men riding in the pickup truck were thrown from the vehicle. Officials added that those two were sent to areas hospitals as possible trauma patients. A third person suffered minor injuries. The current medical status of the surviving accident victims is not known at this time.
