Riverside Parkway Pedestrian Crash Snarls Traffic at Start of Morning Commute

April 03, 2019

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County Police was forced to shut down busy thoroughfares so they could investigate a fatal pedestrian crash on Thursday, March 21, 2019. The collision transpired around 6:30 a.m. The road closures backed up traffic significantly and led to traffic jams right as the morning commute commenced according to a report filed by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution online. Despite police keeping the roads closed for several hours so they could investigate what happened, they were unable to conclude, and Cobb County police still have the matter under further investigation. They have not released any information concerning criminal charges or who might be at fault for causing the accident. *

Traffic in the northwest Atlanta area was slow Thursday morning while Cobb County investigated what caused a motorist to collide with a pedestrian on Riverside Parkway near the I-20 overpass in Cobb County.  Crash investigators partially closed the on-ramp from Riverside Parkway headed eastbound on I-20. Additionally, Cobb County investigators closed Riverside Parkway to the north of I-20 as well as the westbound on-ramp to I-20 from Riverside Parkway. Officials kept these lanes closed to traffic for several hours as they worked the scene. News outlets took to social media to keep the public informed about traffic delays associated with the fatal pedestrian accident.

Very few details about the accident were made public by Cobb County police. They did tell news outlets that a man who was originally from Roaring River, North Carolina was walking southerly on Riverside Parkway when a 47-year-old man from Austell, Georgia struck the pedestrian. First responders said that the 66-year-old pedestrian died from his injuries at the scene of the crash. Police are investigating to determine what actions led to this fatal crash. The investigation continues, and there was no word of whether police would issue criminal charges.
