Accident Occurs with School Bus in Stanly County, North Carolina
STANLY COUNTY, NC – According to an online news report at wsoctv.com, emergency personnel in Stanly County, North Carolina were dispatched to the scene of an accident involving a school bus.*
According to state troopers, the accident occurred right around 7:00 a.m. on Palestine Road close to Barnhardt Road, located due north of Albemarle. The school bus, according to local authorities, was the only vehicle involved in the accident. There were twenty students on board the bus when it crashed.
It appears from the accident that three students sustained minor, non-life threatening injuries and were taken from the scene to an area hospital for treatment. Four additional students were taken by their parents to an area hospital just for the sake of being checked out and confirmed that everything is ok.
All of the seven children that went to the hospital have since been released. The bus driver was also taken to the hospital. According to local troopers, the bus was transporting students to North Stanly High School and North Stanly Middle School. Somehow, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle and ran off of the road, striking two culverts.
The highway patrol noted that it is believed that an animal in the road may have caused the accident to occur, however, it is too early at this stage of the investigation to tell what happened. "They are indicating that it may have been a possible animal had entered the roadway," said Trooper M.E. Taylor.
The police are examining cameras on the bus to tell what exactly occurred that caused the bus to crash. The bus driver has not been charged at this time. Soon after the accident, the bus was towed. There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash is currently being investigated by local police.
