Increasing Population & Atlanta Infrastructure are Putting Bicyclists and Pedestrians in Harm’s Way

Atlanta, GA – according to, accidents involving vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians are steadily increasing in the United States.*

According to the Atlanta Regional Commission, there has been a fifty three percent hike in these types of collisions across Atlanta between 2006 and 2015.  The amount of serious injuries or fatalities from these types of accidents increased by twenty six percent.  

Accidents involving bicycles and pedestrians are on the rise across the U.S., including in Georgia. Specifically, was a fifty three percent increase in these types of crashes in Atlanta between 2006 and 2015. The amount of injuries and deaths between 2006 NS 2015 increased by twenty six percent.

According to an editor for Atlanta Magazine, “Atlanta is a city that is really retrofitting itself from being a city where people were leaving in the '70s and '80s and before that to a place where people are now coming back in very large numbers," the editor explained. "What worked back then is not working now."

Per state statistics from the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian accident fatalities accounted for 13.5% of all motor vehicle deaths back in 2015.  In addition, the number of pedestrian fatalities increases by 18.4% from the previous year.  Regarding bicycle accidents, there were 818 bicycle related deaths back in 2015.  This represents a 12% increase from 2014.  Bicycle and pedestrian accidents are most likely to occur after school/at night, on the weekends, in non-rural highly trafficked areas, and with victims who were mostly male.
