Two People Dead in an Hency County Accident on Interstate 78 Northbound
McDonough, GA – According to fox5atlanta.com, two people are dead after a fiery wreck involving a police chase.*
Two people are dead after a fiery crash that occurred due to a police chase in Henry County at approximately 2 a.m. The crash happened near Jodeco Road, close to the 222 mile marker. The Georgia State Patrol notes that Henry County law enforcement was in the pursuit of a 2008 Mazda CX9 that was stolen. The pursuit occurred on Interstate 75 northbound. Law enforcement state that the stolen vehicle left the interstate at exit 222. The car then turned around, and proceeded onto Interstate 75 going south. The Mazda then collided head on with a 2003 Ford F150.
Both drivers died as a result of the accident. The driver of the Ford sadly died at the scene while the Mazda driver perished en route to an area hospital.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation traffic surveillance cameras, a fiery blaze occurred following the accident. Firefighters responded to the accident in trying to put out the fire. The accident scene was closed for five hours as law enforcement and firefighters worked the scene. Traffic was then open at around 7:00 a.m.
This accident involved a police pursuit that turned deadly. According to nationwide statistics, a person dies in a police related pursuit each day. Per the University of Washington’s research, they have released the following data:
- Every year, there are about three hundred deaths in the United States that occur as a result of police pursuits;
- Just over thirty percent of the deaths happened to those who were not part of the police chase; and
- Law enforcement have double the rate of vehicular accidents per million vehicles driven by the public.
