Fatal Boating Accident Between Lea and Topsail Islands in North Carolina
One Boater Killed After Boat Capsizes South of Topsail Island
PENDER COUNTY, NC – according to wwaytv3.com, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is currently conducting an investigation of a fatal boat accident close to Lea and Topsail Islands. The accident happened on Sunday, March 10, 2019.*
According to a male wildlife resources officer, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. off of the inlet between Lea and Topsail Islands. He notes that one man is dead and two other individuals received treatment for hypothermia. The officer notes that there were three males on a nineteen foot fishing boat at the time of the accident. Two of the men were able to sit on top of the boat in its flipped over position, but the third male victim could not get out of the water onto the bottom of the capsized boat.
According to the news report, the officer additionally stated that “eventually the wind and surf grounded the boat and two of the men were able to get out in waist deep water. The men tried to administer aid to the third until Pender EMS made it on scene.” The officer further noted that “the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival of first responders. No one to my knowledge had life jackets on,” said the officer.
At this time, it is not clear what caused the death of the third male involved in the accident in terms of whether he drowned or not. The accident remains under investigation at this time. There are no further details on the accident.
