CDC Generating Report on Health Risks of Electric Scooters

March 08, 2019

AUSTIN, TX. – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is generating a report on the health risks of electric scooters, according to a news story reported online by Researchers are studying data from Austin, Texas regarding scooter accidents and injuries to try to form conclusions about the safety of the vehicles.*

Currently, about 14,000 dockless electric scooters can be found on the streets of Austin, which is one of the highest volumes in the country. While excitement over the vehicles was high in the beginning, officials in Austin started to worry about the safety of the scooters through time. More people were becoming involved in scooter accidents, which prompted city leaders to request the CDC study.

CDC researchers went to Austin in December 2018 and gathered data from September 2018 to November 2018 regarding emergency calls and ER treatments. They analyzed the calls and emergency records to identify people who had sustained injuries from e-scooter accidents.

The report is not yet finished but could be completed sometime in March. The researchers will likely note whether, in their opinion, the Austin sample is reflective of the nation or seems more unique for the area. From reports around the country, it seems like the data will represent what paramedics and doctors across the United States are seeing.

Doctors in Atlanta, Georgia say they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people with scooter injuries coming into emergency rooms. Dr. Hany Atallah, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Grady Health System in Atlanta, says that he is concerned about people riding scooters in heavy traffic and without helmets. He also noted that the scooters could carry greater potential for collisions and passenger ejections because of their small wheels.
