GEORGIA – Georgia State Patrol Troopers with Post 31 responded to more than 100 vehicle accidents in February 2019 in four Georgia counties, according to an online news story from valdostadailytimes.com. Post 31 responds to the counties of Lowndes, Echols, Brooks, and Lanier in Georgia.*

During the month of February 2019, Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol Post 31 responded to 112 vehicle accidents. One of these was a fatal vehicle accident. Details about the fatal accident were not reported in this news article. It is not clear from the news report how many of the 112 accidents resulted in injuries.

Troopers performed 1,064 traffic stops in the four counties, leading to 734 total citations and 1,124 warnings. Troopers issued 254 citations for speeding in the area, 75 citations for seat belt violations, and 33 citations for child restraint violations.

In addition, Post 31 issued 62 citations in February for distracted driving. These are violations of the Hands-Free Georgia Act that has been in effect for about eight months across the state of Georgia. The law states that drivers cannot hold electronic devices while driving, which includes holding cell phones.

Sgt. First Class Jeff Cullpepper with Post 31 stated that drivers in the area needed to remember to drive without distractions. Cullpepper said that any kind of distraction could lead to a vehicle accident, not just cell phone use. Cullpepper also reminds Georgia drivers that they cannot hold phones when stopped at stoplights. To hold a phone or other electronic device, drivers must be legally parked.
