Pilot Killed in Helicopter Crash in Pickens County, Georgia

PICKENS COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report published by, a pilot was killed in a helicopter crash in Pickens County, Georgia. Authorities in Pickens County are investigating the crash and have released preliminary information about the nature of the collision.* 

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and Fox 5 report that the crash took place on the morning of March 5 in Talking Rock, Pickens County, Georgia. A helicopter was flying in the 7800 block of Ellijay Road and was reportedly in the process of trimming trees. Sheriff’s officers stated that saws were attached to the helicopter, and it was performing trimming work next to a power line. 

For reasons still unknown, the helicopter appears to have collided with a tree, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said. The helicopter then crashed to the ground below. A photo from the scene posted on the Fox 5 website shows the aircraft overturned on the ground with significant damage.

The sheriff’s office identified the pilot as a male. His name was released in the Fox 5 report but is withheld from this story. The pilot was reportedly alert at the scene, and emergency crews summoned a medical helicopter to airlift him to Grady Memorial Hospital. Fox 5 reports that the pilot succumbed to his injuries at the hospital at approximately 6 p.m. that day. 

Investigation is ongoing for the accident. It is not clear what company employed the pilot or owned the helicopter. It is also unclear if a federal agency will be looking into the accident. No additional information had been released at the time of the Fox 5 report’s publishing.
