U.S. Pedestrian Fatalities Hit Highest Point Since 1990; GA, FL Among Top Five States
UNITED STATES – The number of pedestrians killed annually in the U.S. traffic collisions has reached its highest point since 1990, according to an online news article published at time.com. Georgia and Florida were among the top five states with the most pedestrian accident fatalities in 2018.*
Preliminary figures published by the Governors Highway Safety Association show that 6,227 pedestrians died in U.S. traffic accidents in 2018, which is the highest number recorded since 1990. The 2018 figure represents an increase of more than 50 percent in fewer than 10 years.
Just five states in the country accounted for an astonishing 46 percent of all the pedestrian fatalities in the nation. The states of Georgia, Florida, Arizona, California, and Texas hold a little over 30 percent of the U.S. population but see almost half of the country’s pedestrian traffic deaths. California had the most pedestrian deaths in 2018 with 432.
The information regarding 2018’s pedestrian fatalities seems to be on course with a trend in rising pedestrian collisions in the United States. The Governors Highway Safety Association stated that a higher number of SUVs on U.S. roadways and distracted driving might be two factors in the worsening numbers. SUV use in the U.S. increased by 50 percent between 2013 and 2017, and SUVs are more likely to cause serious and fatal injuries in collisions with pedestrians.
The Governors Highway Safety Association also recognized that some of the trend might be linked to population growth. Arizona, Florida, and Texas had the largest population increases and also some of the highest numbers of pedestrian fatalities.
