State Patrol Reports One Fatality Accident in Coweta County, Georgia, in Feb. 2019
COWETA COUNTY, GA. – According to a news report posted online at times-herald.com, the Georgia State Patrol has reported that only one fatality accident occurred in Coweta County, Georgia, during the month of February 2019. Troopers responded to almost 60 accidents in the county that month.*
During February, Troopers with Post 24 of the Georgia State Patrol investigated a total of 57 vehicle collisions in Coweta County. Sgt. First Class Mike Searcy said that 49 of those collisions involved injuries, and one involved a fatality. No specific information about this fatal collision was reported in the Newnan Times-Herald story.
In addition, Post 24 Troopers performed more than 550 traffic stops in February and issued close to 400 citations for traffic violations. These included 223 citations for speeding, 16 citations for seat belt violations, 15 citations for distracted driving, and five citations for child restraint violations.
Troopers in Coweta County also made nine arrests for driving under the influence and issued 389 warnings for other driving infractions. The warnings included 26 for distracted driving. Searcy said that 22 percent of all vehicle collisions are caused by driver distraction occurring three seconds prior to the crash. Sixteen percent of all fatal collisions are also caused by driver distraction.
Searcy encouraged drivers in the county and across Georgia to pay attention to the road and eliminate distractions, especially from cell phones. As a reminder, it is illegal to hold an electronic device, like a cell phone, while driving in the state of Georgia. This is pursuant to the Hands Free Georgia Act.
