Tractor-Trailer Carrying Natural Gas Overturns in New York
SCHOHARIE COUNTY, NY. – According to an online news story reported by dailygazette.com, a tractor-trailer carrying natural gas overturned on an interstate in Schoharie County, New York. The incident led to closure of the interstate and evacuation of several homes in the area.*
The accident took place at approximately 5:30 a.m. on March 3 on Interstate 88 in Schoharie County, near Exit 22. A tractor-trailer that was carrying compressed natural gas somehow crashed in the median and overturned. Police reported that it was not yet clear what caused the collision. Officers arrived at the scene and found the rig in the median with signs on the trailer indicating it contained hazardous materials.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, who was not identified, was not injured in the accident, according to police, and he was able to exit the truck cab on his own. Officials responding to the scene immediately shut down the interstate in Central Bridge, New York, and evacuated people in five homes in the area.
Traffic was diverted onto Route 7 during the closure. By 2 p.m. that day, the interstate was still closed between Exit 22 and Exit 23. At that time, officials reported that all gas leaks were under control.
“It’s going to be a lengthy process,” said First Assistant Chief Scott Johnson, of the Central Bridge Fire Department. “Everything’s secure at this time. We’re just trying to do it in a manner as to not cause any other harm to any responders or personnel working to remove the debris.”
No additional information about the circumstances of the collision has been reported at this time.
