Deer collisions can be extremely damaging. A news report from provides tips for preventing a crash with a deer:

Reduce your speed.  One of the surest ways to avoid deer accidents is to reduce your speed. Look out for deer in the road, and travel at a speed that will allow you to brake in time if a deer runs in front of you.

Use your brights when you can.  Your brights will allow you to see deer better at night, but be sure that other drivers are not coming and at risk of being blinded by your lights.

Understand deer behavior.  Understand the times of day when deer are most active, and that deer usually do not travel solo. If you see one deer in the road, it’s likely that other deer are following behind.

Don’t swerve.  When you encounter a deer in the roadway, do not try to swerve away. This can easily lead to a loss of control and a vehicle accident. Apply your brakes as soon as you can, instead of attempting to veer.
