Pedestrian Killed in Accident on I-85 in Montgomery, Alabama

MONTGOMERY, AL. – According to a news report published online at, a pedestrian was killed in an accident on Interstate 85 in Montgomery, Alabama. Officials have not yet released any identifying information about the victim.* 

The Montgomery Police Department reported that a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident occurred on I-85 North in the area of Ann Street. No information was reported about how this crash happened. 

The unidentified pedestrian sustained serious injuries in the crash, which police characterized as life-threatening. He or she was taken to a local hospital. The report stated that the driver of the vehicle was not injured. No descriptive information was reported about the vehicle or the driver. 

Two lanes of I-85 North were closed after the collision, during which time police urged drivers to find other routes. 

Information from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association indicates that pedestrian deaths from traffic collisions have been climbing in the United States. Fatal accidents involving pedestrians have increased at faster rates than other fatal traffic collisions. Between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian fatalities rose by 27 percent in the U.S. 

Pedestrian fatalities represented 11 percent of the total fatal traffic accidents in the country in 2007. In 2016, pedestrian deaths made up 16 percent of all fatal accidents. Research shows that pedestrian accidents today are at their highest point in more than 30 years.  

The Governor’s Highway Safety Association report details pedestrian fatality data for every state in the U.S. In 2016, Alabama’s pedestrian death rate was 2.51 per every 100,000 people.
