E-Cigarette Explosion Kills Man from Fort Worth Texas

February 28, 2019

FORT WORTH, TX. – According to a news story published online by, an e-cigarette explosion recently killed a man from Fort Worth, Texas. The man was only 24 years old and had just left a vape shop when the explosion took place.*

The incident happened on the afternoon of January 27 in Fort Worth. A 24-year-old man from Fort Worth, Texas, reportedly went to the Smoke and Vape DZ vape shop in the city to ask for help with his a Mechanical Mod e-cigarette. An employee said the man did not buy anything at the shop. After leaving the shop, the man apparently attempted to smoke from his pen, and the pen exploded in his face.

Dallas News reports that the young man was severely injured in the explosion, and he died from his injuries. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the pen had dissected the man’s carotid artery during the explosion.

The man’s death is one of two fatalities from vape pen explosions and one of numerous reported injuries from these types of explosions. In 2017, the U.S. Fire Administration released a report in which it stated it had received 133 reports of injuries from e-cigarettes between the years 2009 and 2016. At this time, no one had yet died from e-cigarette explosion injuries.

“No other consumer product places a battery with a known explosion hazard such as this in such close proximity to the human body,” the Fire Administration’s report stated. “It is this intimate contact between the body and the battery that is most responsible for the severity of the injuries that have been seen. While the failure rate of the lithium-ion batteries is very small, the consequences of a failure, as we have seen, can be severe and life-altering for the consumer.”
