February 23, 2019

MORGANTON, NC. – As reported online in a news article from morganton.com, a woman is in critical condition following a head-on vehicle wreck in Morganton, North Carolina. It appears from early investigation that the driver of one of the vehicles was distracted prior to the collision and traveled into opposite traffic.*

At approximately 12:50 p.m. on February 17, a vehicle was traveling west on U.S. Highway 70 in Morganton. Near the area of Summers Road, the vehicle crossed over the centerline of the highway and traveled into eastbound traffic. The vehicle then crashed head-on into an eastbound vehicle.

The eastbound driver swerved off the right side of the road to try to avoid the collision, and upon impact, the eastbound vehicle flew backward and traveled about 80 feet down an embankment. The types of vehicles involved were not included in reports.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle suffered serious injuries in the wreck. First responders called for a medical helicopter, which airlifted this driver to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has been identified as a 59-year-old woman from Morganton, and is said to be in critical condition.

The driver of the westbound vehicle has been identified as a 59-year-old man from Morganton. Epps told North Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers who responded to the scene that he had been looking at a GPS device before the crash. He said the speedometer feature on the GPS was not working, and he was looking at that when realized he had drifted into the opposite lane of travel.

Charges are pending against Epps, Troopers said. No further information was reported.
