Head-On Crash Kills Two, Injures Child in Effingham County, Georgia

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA. – An online news story from savannahnow.com reports that two people were killed, and a child was injured in a head-on vehicle crash in Effingham County, Georgia. Authorities still do not know which vehicle caused the collision. The deceased victims have been identified, but the child has not.* 

At approximately 11:25 a.m. on February 17, two vehicles were traveling on U.S. Highway 80 in Effingham County. The makes and models of the two vehicles were not provided in reports about the accident. One of the vehicles was traveling east on U.S. 80, while the other was traveling west.

Near the area of Key Road, the vehicles crashed into each other head-on. Georgia State Patrol responded to the accident, and Troopers have been investigating the crash. They have not yet reported which vehicle crossed over the centerline of the highway and initiated the crash. They have also not reported on any potential reasons for the collision.

The drivers of both vehicles were killed in the wreck. They have been identified as 39-year-old Kathleen Wilson, of North Bryan County, Georgia, and 39-year-old Durwood Haire Jr., of Savannah, Georgia. Both reportedly died at the scene of the accident. It is not clear which was driving east and which was driving west. 

A 10-year-old child was riding in the vehicle with Wilson, and the child was seriously injured in the accident. Emergency crews transported the child to a local hospital for treatment. The child’s name has not been released, and his or her current medical condition has not been reported. 

Troopers are continuing their investigation and will report additional information when it becomes available.
