Pedestrian Killed in Vehicle Collision in Pensacola, Florida
PENSACOLA, FL. – As reported online in a news story from pnj.com, a pedestrian was killed in a vehicle collision in Pensacola, Florida. The driver of the vehicle has been identified, but the pedestrian’s name has not been released at this time. It is not clear whether charges will be filed.*
The accident occurred on the evening of February 13 at about 8:20 p.m. that day. On Michigan Avenue, near the area of West Shore Drive, a 2011 GMC Sierra was traveling east and started to travel into the center turn lane to make a left-hand turn. A pedestrian was standing in the roadway at the time, and the driver of the GMC did not see the pedestrian until the last minute.
The driver tried to brake but was not able to avoid a collision, according to Florida Highway Patrol. The front end of the GMC then hit the pedestrian. It is assumed the pedestrian was crossing the roadway and pausing in the center lane to wait for a gap in eastbound traffic. Troopers said the pedestrian was not inside a marked crosswalk but did not add whether a crosswalk was available at the intersection.
Troopers reported that the pedestrian was severely injured in the accident. First responders transported him to Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment, but he did not survive his injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Officials are withholding the pedestrian’s identity until next-of-kin has been notified of the accident.
The driver of the GMC was identified as a 58-year-old male from Pensacola. He was reportedly not injured in the collision. Florida Highway Patrol is still completing its investigation, and no additional information has been released at this time.
