Wrong Way Crash Kills Spring Hill Man in Hernando County, Florida

February 15, 2019

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL- The tbreporter.com writes that a man died in a collision on State Road 589. The wrong way crash killed 39-year-old Mr. McKenzie of Spring Hill.*

The driver of the other vehicle, 39-year-old Mr. Esteban Jimenez of Frostproof was taken to the Regional Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries. The police reports indicate that Jimenez was drinking prior to the accident.

The crash took place at around 1:43 in the morning close to the 38 mileposts. Jimenez was traveling southbound in a 2014 GMC pickup truck in the northbound lanes. There was a heavy fog when the pickup crashed head-on into McKenzie’s Mini Cooper. The truck then caught fire. The crash shut down SR 589 which remained closed until about 8:35 in the morning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 29 people are killed in alcohol-related collisions every day, averaging out to around one death per every 50 minutes.

As of 2016, about 28 percent of all traffic accident fatalities involved alcohol use. Many drivers who cause these accidents have a history of driving drunk. Drivers who were above the legal limit when they were involved in deadly car accidents were 4.5 times as likely to have been previously convicted for a DWI than people who were not under the influence of alcohol at the time of these accidents. The statistic indicates a high number of repeat offenders. Self-reporting of drunk driving episodes indicates that people drive drunk in the United States about 111 million times a year. Only about 1 million drunk driving arrests are made indicating most people avoid getting pulled over.
