As of 2016, about 28 percent of all traffic accident fatalities involved alcohol use. Many drivers who cause these accidents have a history of driving drunk. Drivers who were above the legal limit when they were involved in deadly car accidents were 4.5 times as likely to have been previously convicted for a DWI than people who were not under the influence of alcohol at the time of these accidents. The statistic indicates a high number of repeat offenders. Self-reporting of drunk driving episodes indicates that people drive drunk in the United States about 111 million times a year. Only about 1 million drunk driving arrests are made indicating most people avoid getting pulled over.
