South Carolina Officials Identify Man Killed in School Bus Collision on Highway 49

February 10, 2019

YORK COUNTY, SC. – Officials have identified the man killed February 5 in a school bus collision on South Carolina Highway 49, according to an online news story reported by wbtv.com. The crash occurred when a pickup truck attempted to pass a school bus and crashed into an oncoming vehicle in York County, South Carolina.

At approximately 8 a.m., a vehicle was traveling behind a York District 1 school bus on Highway 49 in York County. The vehicle switched into the opposite lane of travel to try to pass the bus near the area of Old Limestone Road.

When the vehicle changed lanes, it drove into the path of an oncoming car and struck that car head-on. The first vehicle then ended up sideswiping the school bus. Photos from the scene show the vehicle that caused the crash was a black pickup truck. The other car was a silver Toyota.

The Toyota driver died in the wreck. His name was not initially released, but officials have now identified him as 45-year-old John Okain. Okain’s city of residence was not included in reports. He was reportedly the music director for Clover Presbyterian Church in York County and recently received a master’s degree in biology.

Authorities reported that no students were on the bus at the time of the accident, so there were no student injuries. The driver of the school bus and another adult on the bus did not sustain any injuries.

One person was seriously injured and airlifted from the scene, but this person has not been identified, and it is not clear what vehicle the person was riding in at the time.
