Teenage Driver in Critical Condition After Wreck in Inverness, Florida
INVERNESS, FL. – According to an online news story reported at chronicleonline.com, a teenage driver is in critical condition following a vehicle wreck in Inverness, Florida. It appears only the teen’s vehicle was involved, and the driver was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.*
The wreck occurred on Highland Boulevard in Inverness. At about 1 p.m., a white Ford Explorer Sport was traveling west on Highland Boulevard and somehow left the roadway near the intersection with Montgomery Avenue. It appears the driver lost control for unknown reasons, and the vehicle rotated and hit a tree on the side of the road.
Upon colliding with the tree, the Explorer flew into the air and overturned. The vehicle then landed on another tree and rolled into a fence. At some point during the collision, the driver was ejected from the Explorer. It is not clear if he was wearing a seat belt at the time.
The driver suffered serious injuries, and emergency responders requested a medical helicopter. The Inverness Fire Department and Nature Coast EMS transported the driver to an open field area by Withlacoochee Technical College, where the medical helicopter landed. The teen was then airlifted to a nearby trauma center for treatment. His is reportedly in critical condition.
The driver has been identified only as an 18-year-old male. His name and city of residence have not been reported at this time.
Following the crash, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office shut down Highland Boulevard between Montgomery Avenue and Camellia Street. The sheriff’s office and Florida Highway Patrol investigated at the scene and are still in the process of reviewing this crash.
