19-Year-Old Sheriff’s Deputy Killed in Vehicle Crash in Wilkes County, Georgia

February 03, 2019

WILKES COUNTY, GA. – A 19-year-old deputy with the Glascock County Sheriff’s Office was killed January 29 in a vehicle crash in Wilkes County, Georgia, according to an online news story reported at augustchronicle.com. The crash involved the deputy’s patrol vehicle and a second vehicle.*

At about 1:40 p.m. on January 29, 19-year-old Glascock County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Ryer Jr was driving a patrol vehicle west on Andrew Drive in Wilkes County, Georgia. Reports indicate Deputy Ryer was on his way to pick up someone from the Regional Youth Detention Center in Washington, Georgia. The individual he was scheduled to pick up was not in the vehicle.

When Ryer came to the intersection of Andrew Driver and Highway 47, he reportedly did not observe a stop sign, and he continued into the intersection. As he drove into the northbound lanes of Highway 47, Ryer’s patrol vehicle collided with another vehicle that was headed north on Highway 47.

The second vehicle crashed into the driver’s side of Ryer’s vehicle, which caused Ryer’s vehicle to spin on the highway. The patrol vehicle came to a rest southbound on Highway 47.

Ryer did not survive the wreck. No information was reported about the second vehicle or the driver of this vehicle. It is not clear if the driver or anyone else in the second vehicle was injured.

“[Ryer] was a great young man and becoming a great officer,” said Glascock County Sheriff Jeremy Kelley in a statement. “He was only with our office a short period of time, but he quickly became one of our family members. He will truly be missed, but absolutely never will be forgotten.”
