Driver Charged in Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Onslow County, North Carolina
ONSLOW COUNTY, NC. – According to an online news story reported by witn.com, an 82-year-old driver is facing criminal charges in connection with a January 29 fatal motorcycle crash that occurred in Onslow County, North Carolina. The driver turned into the path of the motorcycle, leaving the motorcyclist with fatal injuries.*
The crash happened in the afternoon on January 29 on Gum Branch Road in Onslow County. At approximately 1:20 p.m., a vehicle was traveling on Gum Branch Road and attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Raintree Road. It is not clear what direction the vehicle was traveling, and a description of the vehicle was not released.
In attempting the turn, the vehicle drove into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The two then collided at the crossing in front of a Dollar General store. The motorcyclist suffered severe injuries, and officials pronounced him deceased at the scene. He has been identified as 39-year-old James Buckland Jr., of Jacksonville, North Carolina. Authorities did not say whether Buckland was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 82-year-old Rena Rieve, of Richlands, North Carolina, was injured in the accident, as was a passenger in her vehicle. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries and their current conditions were not reported. The passenger has been identified as Margaret Strickland (age and city not reported).
Rieve has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield the right of way. Investigation continues, and it is not clear if a court date has been set at this time.
