February 04, 2019

WILKES COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report published at, a young Georgia sheriff’s deputy was killed January 29 in a vehicle accident in Wilkes County, Georgia. It appears from preliminary investigation that the deputy ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle on Georgia Highway 47.*

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on January 29, 19-year-old Deputy Joshua Ryer Jr., of Gibson, Georgia, was driving west on Andrew Drive in Washington, Georgia. Ryer was on duty and driving a Glascock County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle. At the intersection with Highway 47, Ryer reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign. He traveled into the northbound lane of Highway 47 and collided with a northbound vehicle.

The northbound vehicle struck Ryer’s vehicle on the driver’s side, after which Ryer’s vehicle spun and continued on about 60 feet before coming to a rest. The other vehicle also traveled another 60 feet before stopping. Ryer suffered critical injuries and did not survive. It is not clear if the driver of the other vehicle was injured.

Ryer joined the Glascock County Sheriff’s Office in September 2018. He was traveling to the Regional Youth Detention Center in Washington at the time of the accident.

Following the wreck, the Glascock County Sheriff’s Office posted a message to social media, saying, “Please be in prayer for the Sheriff’s Office as we mourn the loss of one of our beloved Sheriff Deputies.
