Augusta Ranked No. 20 in Most Dangerous Metros for Pedestrians

February 02, 2019

AUGUSTA, GA. – Augusta, Georgia, is one of the most dangerous metropolitan areas in the country, according the results of a study reported online at In a study recently performed by Smart Growth America, the area of Augusta-Richmond County was ranked No. 20 in the most dangerous areas for pedestrians.*

The Richmond County Coroner says that six pedestrians were killed in 2018 in Augusta. This number was lower than in 2017, during which 11 pedestrians died in traffic collisions. Many pedestrian accidents are caused by inattention from drivers and pedestrians. In most of the incidents in Augusta, however, the drivers were not found at fault.

Pedestrians need to be careful about wearing dark-colored clothing at night and crossing outside of crosswalks, according to the county coroner’s office.

“A lot of the issues come from the pedestrian, who’s wearing dark clothing, not crossing at a crossing walk,” said Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. “Crossing where it’s not well lit and wearing dark clothing.

Bowen also said alcohol and drugs play a role in many pedestrian accidents. This includes alcohol and drug use on the part of both pedestrians and drivers. Drivers and pedestrians also agree that Augusta could use more crosswalks and sidewalks and better lighting on some streets.

Drivers and pedestrians can help keep people safe by following some basic safety tips and by remembering the grief that families go through when someone is lost to a traffic accident. Bowen says talking to families after an accident is one of the hardest parts of the job.

“We have to think about the families that we are going to tell this to,” Bowen said. “What we’re going to say, how we’re going to say it, and what’s going to be their reaction to it. It’s tough.”
