City of Atlanta Agrees to $500,000 Settlement in Police Crash Case

January 29, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online story reported at legalreader.com, the City of Atlanta, Georgia, has agreed to a $500,000 settlement to resolve a case regarding a police crash. An officer crashed into a woman’s vehicle in February 2018, causing the woman serious and lasting injuries.*

On February 21, 2018, Atlanta police officer Phillips, 27, was on her way to a scene associated with a 911 call. At the intersection of Peeples Street and Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, Phillips ran a red light, and her police cruiser crashed into another vehicle. Reports indicated that Phillips was running her lights and siren, but a building at the intersection blocked the view for her and the driver of the other vehicle.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, Ms. Williams was seriously injured. She received emergency medical treatment after the crash, which included amputation of one of her arms.

“Everything has changed for me,” Williams said about her accident injuries. “I’m just not the same. I can’t cook. I can’t put my clothes on. The way I’m looked at in public … There are so many mental and psychological things I’m also facing.”

Williams sued the City of Atlanta for damages, and the City Council’s Public Safety Commission recently agreed to a settlement in her lawsuit in the amount of $500,000. The settlement resolves the civil case, but a criminal case related to the crash is ongoing.

In January, a Fulton County grand jury indicted Phillips on felony charges of serious injury by vehicle and violation of her oath of office. The grand jury also indicted her on misdemeanor charges of failure to obey a traffic control device and reckless driving. The Atlanta Police Department has suspended Phillips with pay.
