Vehicle Wrecks Wreak Havoc on Morning Rush Hour in Atlanta Metro

January 29, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – Several vehicle wrecks on January 28 wreaked havoc on the morning rush hour in the Atlanta, Georgia, metro area, according to an online news story reported at 11alive.com. One of those wrecks involved a vehicle hitting a police officer on Interstate 75 in Clayton County, Georgia.*

Reports described traffic in the downtown area of Atlanta as a “disaster.” A vehicle wreck at North Avenue closed down all northbound lanes of the Downtown Connector, which caused extensive traffic backups during the morning commute rush hour. No information was reported about the cause of this accident or the number of vehicles involved. It is not clear if anyone was injured.

Significant delays were reported in and around downtown and midtown due to this accident. The delays extended all the way back to Georgia Highway 166. In the areas of Interstate 75 and Interstate 85, traffic was at a complete standstill. Vehicles traveling on I-75 North from Tara Boulevard to I-285 were seeing delays as long as an hour.

In addition, a wreck was reported on Georgia Highway 78 West, near West Park Place. This wreck added to the already gridlocked traffic in the area. And further delays occurred because of a pedestrian collision on I-75 that ended with an injured police officer.

Police in Clayton County responded to the area of I-75 North and CW Grant Parkway due to a pedestrian collision. A vehicle had struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking on the interstate. A passing vehicle then drove into the crash scene and struck a police officer. The officer is in stable condition, but the double accident at this location caused all northbound lanes on I-75 to close.
